I didn't get ALL the DLC and most of my time was spent in EA. For example, Battleships and Cruisers are best used at range while Corvettes and Destroyers are better close up.
The vanilla destroyers are Buffalo: The standard freighter, can come with shielded cargo holds. Nothing quite as satisfying as the big guns raining down some Starsector provides examples of: Absent Aliens: Humanity is the only known sapient organic species and the only suggestion that this even might not be the case is a bit of in-universe speculation in the Onslaught's codex entry suggesting that some people believe the Onslaught was created to defeat some now-forgotten alien threat.
Lead by the Pentarchy, a group of five creatures free to pursue their aims with no oversight or qualms, the ponies that live in Barrad are treated as nothing more then experiments. I didn't find it as fun or rewarding as Void Destroyer 2but it is a pretty game that had solid mechanics for cap ship commander + lite 4X empire-ish building. Destroyers are generally a middle ground between the formidable cruisers and the agile frigates. While the Prime Directive was observed aboard Starfleet vessels, this was not true of civilian ships.
